comment RLIMIT_NPROC suddenly overwhelmed
What I posted is exactly what I'm trying to do ;) I'm trying to set RLIMIT_NPROC. setprlimit applies to the process I specify the PID of (the child) and not to the parent script, ps, etc., so that shouldn't be the problem. Thanks for answering, still confused by this.

comment Is there a difference of stability between Linux distros?
Debian isn't necessarily more or less stable than CentOS. I've had some machines run great with Debian for a while only to suddenly crash and burn, while others experience strange problems with CentOS. In a server environment, where the physical machine is likely to stay constant, I'd say CentOS and Debian are equally stable.

comment Debian restarts itself after booting with a “not responding” error
Hm, today the computer started working perfectly fine again. @Gilles, would this mean the RAM is going bad, and if so, even though the computer works fine, should I replace my RAM?
