comment Why doesn't docker container start at boot w/ upstart script on Ubuntu 12.04?
It'd be more upstart-ish to change the docker job to emit a signal (docker-started) and have that signal trigger the container jobs to start.

The commands vipw and vigr also exist for the same reason.

comment Peculiar lack of RHEL 5.8 service management documentation
If I want to go to the "RHEL Documentation", I'm going to go to the "RHEL Documentation". OK, I lie, I'll Google it. HOLY SHIT FIRST HIT IS access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs. Oh look! There's ALL THE RedHat DOCUMENTATION.

comment log into ec2 using SSH but sudo prompts for password
Presumably you're using an AMI provided by Amazon? It should have a default password for that user.

comment SSH session pauses mid datastream; resumes with a keypress
Sleep status just means there's nothing to run, not that it's Stopped. It may be interesting to attach to the process with strace when that happens and observe where it's sleeping and what happens when you press a key.

comment How to kill a process with a single command?
Suggesting killall is VERY BAD ADVICE. It does very different things depending on which Unix/Linux you're on.

comment Any reason NOT to run Linux in a VM all the time?
Virtual machines on modern systems is not emulation. If anything the IO is emulated, but usually the drivers themselves are aware they are in a VM and there is little overhead.

Similarly, netcat on both ends makes for a great simple, easy communication channel. tar cf - /path/to/dir | nc 1.2.3.4 5000 on one server, nc -l -p 5000 > backupfile.tar on the other.

comment Why is echo ignoring my quote characters?
You need to explain what you're trying to do. Such as "I want to append the following text: '…' to a file."

comment Live-migration of a SLES9 DomU?
Does this happen every time you migrate the domU? Does it happen with other domUs? Have you contacted Novell support?

comment How can I have a separate umask for directory or user?
/dev/hda6 is the device node in the example on that page… odds are your server is different. You need to add the 'acl' option to the appropriate mountpoint in /etc/fstab and remount it (mount -o remount, acl /dev/whatever /srv)

That depends… what OS are you using?
