comment How can I fill the free space with zeroes in Ubuntu 12.04 (ext4)?
This probably isn't a Unix/Linux question. The problem you are having is finding the tool on the Windows Hypervisor to resize a virtual hard drive. Sounds like a Windows question.

I believe I had tried the mixed syntax and it also failed for me in the past, I avoid it.

Updated the answer with conditionals for facility. Wasn't clear what you were trying to do with the syntax above.

comment Install OpenSUSE 12.3 on a Virtual Machine
Further more, if you are using a graphical distro with a graphical installer, you better give at least 1GB or 2GB if you have it to the Virtual Machine.

comment badblocks and “end_request: I/O error” in output
Those type of errors point to a physical disk or controller problem. You are on the brink of losing data if you haven't already. Grab a clonezilla liveCD and new disk and clone that thing with the "rescue" option ASAP.

I agree with @MartinvonWittich these sort of errors almost always mean bad controller or disk.
