I'm not sure if this is doable in your situation but you could run screen bash (or whichever other shell is your preference) and then screen -x in some other unrelated shell to connect to the screen you created.

comment ulimit: difference between hard and soft limits
+1 for the soft limits use case. Resident set size limit (ulimit -m, RLIMIT_RSS) is an example of a limit that isn't effective on Linux anymore. Virtual memory limit (ulimit -v, RLIMIT_AS) works, though.
