Does this happen if syntax highlighting is disabled (:syntax off)? My guess is that your machine(or file system) is too slow.

comment How can I extend the wait time for the watch command beyond 4200 or so seconds?
To add to @jw013's hack: sleep also takes human postfixes, so sleep 4h would seem fitting. I made a poor man's watch which might be useful.

comment Where do I find messages regarding last failed linux boot?
@rozcietrzewiacz Thanks for being more specific. It would be interesting if you could give examples of default configurations which do not generate both files regardless of the syslog daemon running. I can only think of non-linux systems exhibiting this behavior out of the box (FreeBSD for example), but if you have any (particularly linux distributions and/or system logger default configurations), I'd love to know!

/var/log/syslog and /var/log/messages are not the same file, and one should not under normal circumstances exist without the other. They're both generated by the syslog daemon(like rsyslog). Usually syslog will contain most if not all messages, whereas messages will be more filtered. See your syslog config (probably /etc/rsyslog.conf) for more details.

comment Do the “play” utility in Linux really have a “delay” to stop it's process with really small files?
It would help to know what your goal for this is. In game programming for instance, such an event(mixing a sound clip in with other sounds) would be asynchronous in that all sounds are mixed together (the sound buffer will still take a while to be flushed, which might contribute to the shutdown duration of the game). You only notice this "delay" because the clip is so very short and you want to return to the console. Music players background/thread the decoding, separating playback from the user interface. If that's all you want to do, then background the process("play <file> &").

comment Flash using wrong audio output with Pulseaudio
Interesting. Do you know what this package actually does? I'm on slackware, and I can't think of why any glue would be required. Glad you got it working!
