comment Why VNC not showing actual Remote Desktop
(If I guessed the VNC server you use right,) you might be able to use Xvnc with inetd as described in its man page (last paragraph of the linked section). Another (kind of high-overhead but neat) solution might be using the Guacamole remote desktop gateway and configuring access there.

comment How do I ensure that only one instance of my ksh script runs on Solaris using NFS?
Anyway, I'm rather confused about your question, since none of the answers in the referenced question uses flock...

How about Perl? Besides, the lock directory solution is available.

comment How to disable energy saving on notebook screen when using Scientific Linux 6.3?
Could you examine its brightness ACPI settings? Maybe echo 10 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness does something (then the problem might be cornered)

comment Making the keyboard eject switch work
I was just trying to find out what could be the reason for your eject key causing the eject button display on screen while failing to actually eject the cdrom... What's your desktop environment? The cdrom isn't mounted, right?

It might try to call eject -- have you installed that? (Does eject /dev/cdrom in a terminal work?)

comment How to create a virtual file that is coupled to a program, e.g. to a `.gz` file via `gzip`?
As it doesn't seem completely unrelated, I'd like to point out that some filesystems (among them Btrfs, Reiser4 and ZFS) support (per-filesystem) transparent compression
