comment How to make MTP work
I've found S3+MTP+Linux to be flaky too. I have had luck with github.com/hanwen/go-mtpfs, but only if I'm "polite" with it (run a single copy command, don't run unison, and sometimes it takes a couple tries to connect at all). I'm not sure if the problem is Samsung or the MTP protocol or what.

comment cat corrupts serial port data
Ah, please update your question to indicate that you've also got an app reading from the serial port. That explains the corruption as the bytes on the serial port are "consumed" when read, so only one app can see them.

comment My computer won't shut off normally
Could be waiting for some background/daemon process to exit cleanly? Try exiting/killing/stopping background services and perhaps try removing network/external storage and see if the shutdown proceeds more smoothly.

comment How to do nothing forever in an elegant way?
@sillyMunky Silly Monkey, WaelJ's answer is wrong (sends infinite zeros to stdin).
