comment Make cd automatically ls
[ -z "$PS1" ] checks if the $PS (interactive prompt variable) is "zero length" (-z). If it is zero length, this means it has not been set, so Bash must not be running in interactive mode. The && return part exits from sourcing .bashrc at this point, under these conditions.

Calibre has a forum at MobileRead.com -- you might ask there.

comment Convert pdf file to epub
I would file a bug report in its issue tracker: they put out a new version every week, and are quick to respond in general, I've found.

comment Select between given characters in vim
I don't know anything other than what it says at :help text-objects. I don't use that plugin, and would never even consider it if it interfered with such basic vim functionality.

comment Is a file manager in Linux a necessity or a luxury?
+1 I think I have a file manager installed (pcmanfm maybe?), but I've never used it. So no, not a necessity. Not sure "luxury" is the right word either.

comment vim always shows help/documentation
This isn't normal behavior. Does it only happen with certain kinds of files? Anything else you can tell us about the circumstances?

comment vim script: how to change “put =” to an append?
I think you'd have better luck dropping the put lines and changing the s... (substitute) lines to include the */

And this thread might help too, since nothing is fedora-specific.

What kind of fs? ext3? ext4?

comment How to change height and width of each page of a pdf
It converts it to PostScript and back, but why that should increase file size so dramatically, I don't know. You probably also go from PDF version 1.5+ to 1.4, which may have something to do with it.

(I fixed an earlier, worse answer.)

comment Is there a keyboard shortcut to make a window occupy half the screen?
That tells us what DE you're using, but not what Window Manager. (Compiz/Metacity/etc.)

comment How to run a shell script containing an awk command
what error? Putting that alone in a text file and running sh count.sh works for me, though I'd prefer in general to use a shebang line, and possibly even an awk-only script... I still don't see why yours should generate an error, however.

comment Some people told me FreeBSD is NOT Unix, is that right? Confused
It's obviously not a duplicate question, but I think all you need to know can be found at the "Is Linux a Unix?" question

comment How to delete a file in Arch console?
I'd try Lubuntu or Crunchbang or Puppy then. Heck, even Damn Small Linux would be easier than Arch.

comment Count how many times each line appears in a file
Note that puts the numbers first. If you were fussy about the order, you could do: uniq -c filename.txt | sed 's/[^0-9]*\\([0-9]\+\\) \\(.*\\)/\2 \1/'

comment Lowercasing all directories under a directory
This showed up midway through my writing the (basically the same) suggestion: for file in * ; do if [ -d "$file" ] ; then dest="$(echo $file | sed y/ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ/abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz/)" ; [ "$dest" != "$file" ] && mv "$file" "$dest" ; fi ; done

comment Has the GNU coreutils stat tool changed?
I wanted to come back and note that they've reverted to the old behavior for version 8.7 of coreutils, though if you want the decimal places, you can use, e.g., stat -c $.5Y filename to get 5 decimal places. Otherwise you get none.
