One minor detail that is not answered here: You can preserve the attributes when copying (of course you have to copy to a filesystem with xattr support). cp has an option "--preserve=xattr"

Unrelated to the “minus” thing: Maybe change your example to something else? There are quite a couple of UNIX newbies who blindly copy&paste everything they find... especially if there is no hint of what it is supposed to do.
