Unix & Linux Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for users of Linux, FreeBSD and other Un*x-like operating systems.. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I recently installed Debian "wheezy" v 7.1.0 which defaults to using GNOME 3 as the desktop environment. It looks pretty and I want to use it to see how it differs from previous versions of GNOME. However, on my antiquated system, the desktop renders very strangely. I am particularly annoyed that all apps simply appear as a blue or transparent box. (Screenshots at the end of this question.)

For reference, here are the specs for my box:

  • AMD Athalon XP 3000+
  • 1 GB RAM
  • MSI MX4000-T64 graphics card
  • 80 GB HDD

What do I need to do to fix this? Do I need to install the correct graphics drivers? If so, how do I do that?
