I have several linux OS's on my laptop the main one being Ubuntu which I used to boot the other OS's with. I recently had to reinstall Mint Cinnamon, during the installation grub was installed automatically. I reinstalled grub in Ubuntu and purged grub in Mint, as far as I was concerned everything was OK. However each time I updated and upgraded Mint the latest kernel was held back. I found out today that the kernel will only upgrade if grub is installed. Is there any way to separate the kernel dependency on grub.
