I've found that reloading the nscd service (/etc/init.d/nscd reload) should do this. However, I don't have a nscd file in my /etc/init.d directory, so how do I perform this?

"system cache" - What kind of cache? You point at nscd, which is a name service... – gertvdijk Dec 4 '12 at 8:33
yes dns but doesn't matter now because wiped system and starting again. – freja Dec 4 '12 at 10:32
that makes more sense, so I've edited your question accordingly for future reference. waiting for peer review. I suggest you add your current solution as an answer. – gertvdijk Dec 4 '12 at 10:37

@freja I believe you have a 'close' link under the tags you can use if you want, and even a 'delete' link (possibly only once you close it). Or you could leave it open, so we can figure out how to do it without wiping your machine. Sounds rather drastic to clear a DNS cache. – derobert Dec 4 '12 at 16:30
