Unix & Linux Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for users of Linux, FreeBSD and other Un*x-like operating systems.. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I noticed that my cable provider isn't allowing me to access certain websites. At first I thought it was just my system, but after checking several other devices (Windows and iPad), I noticed it wasn't just me. I confirmed my suspicion with http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ and confirmed it again by taking my Android phone off of my home WiFi and using the 3G network to connect to the website.

My question is how do I scan for other sites I cannot access? I'm not looking to scan the entire internet but there inlies the problem of how to begin searching/scanning for sites that I do not know that I do not have access to.

Or is there a way to determine a list of websites that the majority of people have access to that I don't and begin working from there. Possibly checking through some domain servers.

(when I say access, i mean just hit the homepage of it. I understand that there are many places I will just not have access to due to living in the US.)

Is it that you can't resolve the domain name? If that is the case, just change your DNS resolver to use Google's Public DNS servers (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4). If you aren't sure and want a way to test, run nslookup <domain_you_cant_access> and then run nslookup <domain_you_cant_access> 8.8.8.8 and compare your results. – sparticvs Nov 8 '12 at 4:46

I don't see a Unix and Linux question here. – jordanm Nov 8 '12 at 5:15

What would you do with that huge steaming pile of obsolete domain names, temporarily down pages, restricted sites, temporarily unreachable networks? How will you tell those from the ones your ISP is blocking? – Mat Nov 8 '12 at 6:58

What will you do with this information when you have it? If it's a question of access, why not just use a proxy for sites that you aren't reaching but believe should be accessible? – ire_and_curses Nov 8 '12 at 9:13

Not completely unrelated: to test your ISP's network neutrality, have a look at Switzerland. – sr_ Nov 8 '12 at 11:00
