I've working on Arch Linux and in 99% of time I connect to internet by WLAN but sometimes I need to use ethernet connection, so today I see something strange. My eth0 device is down, and I can't get it up. I tried

# ip link set eth0 up
# ifconfig eth0 up

But after any of above commands ip link shows:

Just to rule out the obvious, have you tried the same cable on another NIC? You could also try to load the kernel module with debugging parameters (debug=16 with r8169 module, see modinfo output for your module). Do mii-tool or ethtool give you anything useful? –  Stéphane Chazelas Sep 24 '12 at 13:42

Seems RealTek 8168B has problems on Debian Squeeze. Try those:

I've had some similar issues on that same adaptor for unidentified causes. The only solution was to power down the machine, just rebooting, unloading module or various "reset"s via /sys interface didn't fix it.

Installing the driver downloaded from RealTek as opposed to the one included in the vanilla kernel seems to cause the issue to occur less often.
