I'm running Jessie with MATE. The volume keys themselves are functional but they don't change the volume, and while I can use the volume control widget it's inconvenient. My problem is similar to this issue except I have pulseaudio
installed.
Now, I did delete pulseaudio at one point, but I later reinstalled it, so I don't know how to fix this. I believe it installed packages to replace pulseaudio when I deleted it and maybe there's a conflict? The keys themselves work and are correctly mapped in my keyboard shortcuts. The megaphone icon thing appears on the screen when I press the volume keys, but the volume won't change.

might be important. (If anyone actually knows, please don't let this comment prevent you from posting an answer!)
