If someone is running say, Ubuntu, are the likely to be regarded as less technical of a person as opposed to someone running a more "hands-on" distribution? Or is Linux just Linux and that's the end of it?

If Linux was just Linux there wouldn't be distros at all. Yes of course you are judged by the distro you use in the same way that you are judged by the car you drive. If you pull up in a Ferarri ... your moms Minivan ... a hand made repli-car Cobra you assembled yourself ... it all says something about you. Is it the end of the story on you? Certainly not. WHAT it says in the case of Linux distros is not something a right-answer focused QnA site is made for. – Caleb Aug 7 '11 at 17:27

It's more of what you do with a distro: is it an appliance, and you're a consumer? Or is it a tool and you're a maker or builder?
