Unix & Linux Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for users of Linux, FreeBSD and other Un*x-like operating systems.. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am using Gnome classic on Debian Wheezy, and I sometimes get a popup for package updates. The UI prompts for a root password, and will only accept root. Is there some way for me to add my account to a root-like group so I can use my normal user account login, similar to a sudo invocation? I don't have root on the machine but have sudo privileges for pretty much everything. This happens for other GUI interactions like changing the system time for bug testing and changing network settings. This all can be done in the command line, but it is cumbersome.
